A Challenging End to an Incredible Week
After an amazing week serving the communities of Batey Alemana and La Cubana, we began our trip to the airport. However, just outside of Guayacanes on the road to Santo Domingo, a cargo truck lost control and collided with our bus.
Four of our team members were transported to the hospital. The accident and the condition of the bus were devastating, but we are incredibly thankful that everyone survived.
Getting everyone home took time and patience. It was five days before the majority of the team made it back, and one member had to stay an additional week before she could return home. Thankfully, we were able to fly in her sister to be with her during that time.
We prioritized sending the injured and our younger team members home first, staying behind to ensure everyone made it back safely. It was a difficult and emotional experience, but through it all, we witnessed resilience, support, and the power of community.
While we won’t be sharing pictures or specific details of the accident here, we would love to share how the community surrounded us with care and support. From the moment of the accident to the days that followed, their kindness and generosity were overwhelming.
